It is always a good idea to perform any processing, like your level changes, on a file with a greater word length than that of the final file. So, if the final will be 16-bit, you'd want to do any processing at 24-bit minimum (32 float is better). Then, you'd need a high quality dithering algorithm (e.g. POW-r dither) to bring it back down to 16 bits for the final file. Good dithering will preserve much of the low level information from the longer word length.

Therefore, if your software allows, if the original file is 16 bits, do a 'Save As' and make sure you select 24-bit (or 32-bit float), give the copy a new name (like songname32) and do your processing to the copy.
