I’ve frequently been asked this question from many aspiring music producers over the years: “What’s the BEST Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) to use for my Hip Hop beats?” First off, let me tell you a little history on the software I’ve used to date. My History So back in 2006, I started using a software called Fruity Loops (now FL Studio) to make my first beats.

This now seems to be a pretty popular DAW among the Hip Hop producers today. Being a beginner, FL Studio was great! Easy to use and the sequencer was very simple and intuitive. I must say, being able to create a drum track in only a matter of minutes (as a newbie) was very gratifying!

But as I started to progress with my music production, I was introduced to another digital audio workstation, Ableton Live. The more I understood what Ableton Live was capable of, the more I practiced, learned and eventually mastered it.

And today, I exclusively use Ableton Live to create my,. So you may be asking yourself “So what. Does that mean I have to use FL Studio? Or Ableton Live?” Well of course these are only two of the many digital audio workstations available out on the market like Pro Tools, Reason, Cubase and Logic Pro to name a few more.

“Well if there’s so many programs to choose from, how do I know which one to use?” I can tell you from my personal experience, just because one producer recommends Ableton Live or the next beat maker suggests that you use Reason, or FL Studio or whatever the case may be does not necessarily mean that those programs will work best for YOU. Everyone has a slightly different workflow and is in need of slightly different options or features, and so it ultimately comes down to doing your own research (and experimenting!) to find the best digital audio workstation for you. If, however, you absolutely cannot decide just pick one 🙂 Many of these software manufacturers’ websites will have free demos for you to download and test out yourself. If you try it out and like it, then upgrade to the full version and start the process of mastering that particular software. From a slightly different viewpoint, one of the benefits to using Pro Tools is that is considered to be an “industry standard”, and therefore is very universal and would be readily available in most music studios. However, for most independent, home-based beat makers with music production laptops, this shouldn’t make much of a difference.

So what’s the absolute BEST Digital Audio Workstation? At the end of the day, there is no single best DAW.
